03 Background
About.
Medicine and engineering ask the same essential question: how do we make a good decision with an incomplete picture?
Profile
Sharkey, MD, PhD, is an emergency and EMS physician at an academic medical center, where the work spans clinical practice, directing an EMS fellowship, and teaching emergency medicine residents, fellows, and paramedics. Sharkey also serves as medical director for a suburban fire and EMS agency. The protocols written there aim to be grounded in the evidence and equally practical, shaped by what paramedics actually face on the street.
Doctoral training in biomedical engineering, with dissertation work on imaging iron and atherosclerosis by MRI, built a habit of asking what a measurement can and cannot show. Sharkey specializes in inference from scarce data, a thread that runs from imaging research through clinical decisions to the tools built for colleagues in research and education.
This site brings the two threads together, with a growing library of clinical and EMS education alongside selected research and engineering work.
